| En plena avenida Larco, frente al Parque Central y a escasos metros de la Municipalidad de Miraflores, se encuentra la antigua casa de la familia Castro Iglesias - Thorndike, que fue construída en 1912 por el arquitecto Rozzaga.
La familia Castro Iglesias se remonta a los tiempos de la Colonia, cuando sus antecesores, el conde de Lurigancho y el marqués de Otero, obtuvieron sus títulos por servicios prestados a la corona española.
La señora Thorndike fue hija de una distinguida dama chilena y un destacado ingeniero norteamericano quien vino al Perú para construir los puentes del ferrocarril en las alturas de los Andes, junto a Enrique Meiggs.
En 1932 la casa fue remodelada por el ingeniero-arquitecto Luis Santistevan Benavides, luciendo tal como es actualmente. Su estilo hace recordar al Palacio de Gobierno de Lima que también fue objeto de refacción en la misma época.
Esta magnífica casa fue la residencia de los señores Castro Iglesias y de sus hijas Virginia y Rosa y vió nacer a los García Alvarado, hijos de los señores Javier García Castro y Rosa Alvarado de García Castro. On Avenida Larco in front of Miraflores Central Park, located a few metres from the Municipality, is the old but impressive house of the Castro Iglesias-Thorndike family which was constructed in 1912 by the Architect Rozzaga.
The Castro Iglesias family goes way back to Peru's Colonial period, when its forerunners earned the titles, Count of Lurigancho and Marques of Otero, for services rendered to the Spanish Crown.
Mrs. Thorndike was the daughter of a very distinguished Chilean lady and an American engineer who came to Peru with Henry Meiggs to construct railway bridges in the heights of the Andean mountains.
The house was remodelled in 1932 by Architect Engineer Luis Santisteban Benavides which gave it its present look. It was fashioned after Lima's Presidential Palace which was also restored at the same time.
This magnificent house was the residence of the Castro Iglesias and their daughters Virginia and Rosa. It also saw the birth of the García Alvarado, children of Javier García Castro and Rosa Alvarado de García Castro. Ana Maria and Josefina García Alvarado, its present owners opened up this precious house to the public upon the death of their aunt, Virginia Alvarado Castro. |
